Li Chen rumoured to be the new male lead in ‘The Legend of Ba Qing’

(Toggle) Photographs of Chinese actor Li Chen dressed in period costume went viral on Weibo yesterday (May 16), with many netizens speculating that the actor was replacing Chinese actor Gao Yunxiang in Chinese historical series ‘The Legend of Ba Qing’ as the new male lead.

The series stars Li Chen’s fiancée, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing as the female lead, but the drama’s telecast date was indefinitely postponed after Yunxiang was accused of sexual assault when he was in Australia.  Plans for a reshoot were also shut down after crew members claimed that it will be difficult and costly to re-shoot the scenes involving Yunxiang’s character, Emperor Qin Shi Huang, as they were scenes that involved hundreds of extras.

The photos showed Li Chen filming a scene in front of a green screen, and netizens speculated that his face will be edited over Yun Xiang’s face in the series so the show could go on air.

While producers of the film, Zhejiang Talent Television and Film Co., Ltd, has yet to confirm the news, the internet was already abuzz with statements like “Li Chen saves Fan Bingbing”, “Celebrity couple Li Chen and Fan Bingbing takes the stage” and “Real-to-reel life couple on set”, keeping fans hopeful for a revamped series.

Bingbing was previously said to have invested NT$1.2 billion (approximately S$53.8 million) in the series, as she had believed that it will do well.

The couple last collaborated on Li Chen’s self-directed movie Sky Hunter, which had a poor showing in China.
