Crunchyroll’s Most Popular Spring 2018 Anime by State (US) – “No Sequels” Edition

Hello everyone!! The Spring Season is officially halfway over (!!!), and people are comfortably settled into their favorite shows. It’s at this time in the season that we here at Crunchyroll like to share some viewership data with everyone, so you can get a better sense of what your neighbors are watching and see which anime you may have been missing out on!

A quick note on methodology: this map is looking at which show has the most current viewers as of the most recent episode by state, excluding any continuing titles from the previous season and direct sequels, like My Hero Academia Season 3. That’s why spin-offs like Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online are included here, but anime such as Black Clover or BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS are absent, despite their popularity.

Without any further delay, here’s our map of the United States!

Crunchyroll's Most Popular Spring Anime by State - 2018-Q1

The surprise hit of the season is clearly MEGALOBOX, the 50th Anniversary Project of Champion JoeMEGALOBOX follows a boxer eventually known as “Joe” as he roughs his way up to the top of a major megalo boxing tornament known as “Megalomania” to get a second chance in the ring with top-fighter Yuri. From episode one, fans were blown away by this series, and as you can tell from the map, the word is out! The series’ ambitious visual aesthetic, thoughtfully paced storyline, and unforgettable soundtrack have drawn comparisons to Shinichirō Watanabe’s Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Camploo, and honestly, I can’t disagree myself – it’s got the same kind of vibe that the shows on Toonami in the late 90s had that hooked me on anime in the first place.

The other top contender on the map is Sword Art Online spin-off Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online. What originally started off as a series of light novels from Kino’s Journey author Keiichi Sigsawa quikly became a sensation in every medium that its entered, and its anime adaptation is no different. It’s not life-or-death in this take on the full-dive virtual reality game franchise, but the stakes don’t feel any smaller when our protagonist LLENN finds herself in the middle of a PUBG-styled deathmatch with only a single ally on her side. The fervor of the GGO anime has gripped SAO critics and SAO apologists alike – so even if following Kirito and Asuna’s adventures through Aincard wasn’t your thing, give the first episode of LLENN’s journey a try!

As has become the case with these maps, the states with smaller anime-watching populations allow for the most compelling viewership patterns to rise to the top. While in the last few seasons, the Dakotas have tracked more in line with the rest of the country, this Spring, the favorites in the North and South are PERSONA5 the Animation and Legend of the Galactic Heroes, respectively – both of which are largely unrepresented anywhere else, losing the battle to Joe or LLENN. I want to give a shoutout to Wyoming for their love of Umamusume: Pretty Derby, but considering the long culture around horses in the state, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that horse girls run free in a place where mustangs still roam as well.

As an aside, the reason why sequels were avoided this time around is similar to last Spring when Attack on Titan returned for a second season – the lack of diversity made for a fairly unintersting map, particularly when Eren’s screaming face took up all but three states in the continental United States. This isn’t to say the victory for the Survey Corps wasn’t deserved – it was a fantastic continuiation of the franchise! – but the fun of these maps comes from comparing your state’s tastes to your neighbor’s. For those curious, if this map were done in the typical fashion, All Might’s face would be smiling from sea to shining sea.

No matter what your state chose, between all 58 simulcasts this seeason, there’s almost a full day worth of anime added to Crunchyroll every week! For a full line-up of what’s available this season in your country, check out the Crunchyroll lineup page or get a calendar-shaped view on our Simulcast Calendar!!

What are the biggest surprises to you? What anime did you expect to see more or less of? Let us know in the comments, and please look forward to more maps in the future ~
