Be First!

Anime was a major winner at this year’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival, with films from directors Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, Ping Pong) and Sunao Katabuchi (Princess Arete, Mai Mai Miracle) earning big prizes. Yuasa came away with top honors, taking home the Cristal for a Feature Film award for the Science SARU production Lu Over the Wall

As for Katabuchi, his acclaimed In This Corner of the World film won the Jury prize.

Here’s the full list of feature films that were in competition this year, via Cartoon Brew:

  • Animal Crackers by Tony Bancroft and C Scott Sava (USA)
  • A Silent Voice by Noako Yamada (Japan)
  • Big Fish & Begonia by Xuan Liang and Chun Zhang (China)
  • In This Corner of the World by Sunao Katabuchi (Japan)
  • Ethel and Ernest by Roger Mainwood (United Kingdom)
  • Have a Nice Day by Jian Liu (China)
  • Lu Over the Wall by Massaki Yuasa (Japan)
  • Loving Vincent by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman (Poland, United Kingdom)
  • Tehran Taboo by Ali Soozandeh (Austria, Germany)
  • Zombillenium by Arthur de Pins (France)

This marks the first time for Japan to come away with two of the best prizes for feature films. The last times the Cristal for a Feature Film award went to anime was Hayao Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso in 1993 and Isao Takahata’s Pom Poko in 1995.

Previous Jury and Audience Awards have been presented to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Miss Hokusai, and Colorful.
